Bushcraft

Summer camps from Project Sport – Bushcraft:

What is Bushcraft /Survival Skills?
Participants will be questioned about what we need to survive and arrive at the 4 essentials: air, water, food and shelter. Using the rule of 3’s they will learn how long they can survive without these essentials.

Practical elements of the course include shelter building using tarp sheets and rope or natural materials. Fire lighting using matches or lighters; or have a go at lighting a fire by another method!

Once the shelter is built and the fire lit enjoy toasting marshmallows, bread or something more… and boiling up water for a brew. Bush tucker is also a possibility with foraging for edible plants.

We will also look at building Stretches for cases of injuries and rafts for use of finding food and shelter on a different island.

Nightline – An exploration of the senses. This is a great team activity or equally fun as an individual challenge. The Nightline is essentially a rope which is there to guide you through a course. The challenge is that throughout the course you will be blindfolded which will require you to call on your senses other than eyesight and communicate with your team around you.

Bug hunting – Groups will make and set a bug trap for crawling insects as well as using nets and sheets to trap flying insects. Once a selection of bugs have been trapped the group can identify what creatures they have caught before returning them to their natural environment.

Capture the flag – a team based activity about sneaking past the opposition to gain their flag with out being captured.

Making your bow and arrows using natural materials. Become Bear Grylls for the day!!

Firebuilding – Using natural materials we look at which trees provide us with lighting tools, the components needed to make a fire. Why it is important to cook food and have warmth. How to sterilize water for cleaning wounds and boiling water for hot drinks.
